James Dewey Watson is an American molecular biologist, and a co-discoverer of the structure and function of DNA in 1953.

Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material".  Rosalind Franklin, also instrumental in the discovery, died in 1958.  Watson studied at the University of Chicago and Indiana University and subsequently worked at the University of Cambridge where he first met his future collaborator and friend Francis Crick. (Wikipedia)

Watson is the second person ‎(after Craig Venter)‎ to allow publication of his genome sequence.  We hope that one day knowledge of his genealogy will add depth to the understanding that his genome provides.

Watson is Scotch/Irish from his maternal grandparents surnamed Mitchell and Gleason.  His paternal Watson and Ford lines have many roots in colonial New England, with most immigrants on these lines found so far arriving during the Great Migration of the Puritans from 1620-1643. One exception is Edward Burbeck (b. 1683 Yorkshire, England, reportedly of Scottish parents), who sailed to Boston in 1706, and was the ancestor of several Revolutionary patriots.

Following are some conventions in use on this site:

Dates are entered like "1 Jan 1957". The genealogy program will correctly interpret partial dates and some modifiers, like "about 1812". Old style dates are not converted (although some may have been, it's difficult to know in every case), but if the year is ambiguous the old style and new style years may both be given, like "15 Feb 1632/3".

Sources are listed per individual.

Place names are generally conceived of as four-level: City or town, county, state/province, and country. Levels may be omitted. By convention here, US states and Canadian provinces are indicated by postal abbreviation, and United States is abbreviated as USA. Place names may need to be made precise as geolocation is implemented.

Life is short, and in the spirit of open source and progress in general the work of others is brazenly taken when they seem to be authoritative about a particular line without exhaustive verification. All sources are cited.

No information about living persons is recorded, except for famous persons and the names of their spouses. Empty placeholders representing living persons may be used if needed, however they should be avoided if possible.

Enter "Date Unknown" in the death _location_ if no birth, death, or marriage dates are know for a person. This helps the genealogy software efficiently determine living persons.
